Vintage dresses bearing the “Penney’s Brentwood Frocks” label were sold exclusively at J.C. Penney back in the day. If you would like to know more about the history of the J.C. Penney company, please visit the wonderful Vintage Fashion Guild label resource located here.
A craze for all things French occurred in the USA during the 1950s. At that time, France was widely regarded as the world leader in fashion. Christian Dior had fashionistas worldwide captivated by his feminine silhouettes, particularly the “New Look” ensembles with their nipped waists and full skirts. Service men that returned to the US after serving in France during World War II brought home with them and helped revive a strong interest in French culture. With WWII having ended, France was gradually being rebuilt, and pleasure travel by Americans to France was desirable in the 1950s. American fashion designers in the 50s embraced popular French motifs such as French poodles, Parisian cafe scenes and the Eiffel Tower. This one fabulous dress includes all of those posh motifs!
Enchanting novelty scenes on clothing were all the rage in the 1950s, and no novelty scene was more glamorous than that of Paris! This dress has two large front pockets with painted screen prints depicting Parisian novelty scenes. One pocket portrays a sophisticated fashionista walking her poodle in front of the Eiffel Tower. The second pocket shows this same high-class lady with her poodle enjoying a “Coffee Shop” drink with a dapper gentleman amidst other elegantly dressed patrons. One adorable detail to point out is that the poodle’s sweet bow, collar and leash are in the same blue as its owner’s chic dress, clutch, heels and hair flower. The blue is seen again with the “Coffee Shop” awning and the waiter’s jacket. Blush pink, white and black are the other paint colors that were employed to successfully illustrate the screen printed depictions of Parisian life. The black and white gingham cotton fabric coordinates beautifully with the screen printed scenes on the dress pockets. This shirtdress has a gingham piped top collar with button-down design, short sleeves and gathered dirndl-silhouette skirt.
This dress is a fashion time capsule in that it represents and celebrates a moment in time in American fashion history. A rare and collectible garment, this outstanding dress is a conversation starter and treasure to be cherished.

This vintage 1950’s Penney’s Brentwood Frocks dress is in very good condition with no rips or stains. There is a small area of wear to the fabric on the middle front bodice. It looks like a past owner might have worn a brooch there. Two tiny pin holes are on the backside, one being in the folds of the gathered skirt near the waist. Minor repairs at the waist that are hardly noticeable have been done by a past owner. There is minor paint loss to the novelty images on the front pockets. This dress closes with 5 pearlized plastic buttons down its upper front and hidden hook and eye closure at the waist. This dress has a hand-sewn whipstitched hem indicating a conscientious attention to garment construction not seen in contemporary mass-produced clothing. Pictures are included that show the front bodice wear and waist repairs. Please email if you would like any additional photos. This dress was styled with a crinoline for display purposes. The crinoline is not included with the dress.
